“Omaeilyeo: Awakening Sound” represents a unique fusion of ancient tradition and modern technology, presented within the historic grounds of the Mireuksaji Temple Site, a UNESCO World Heritage location. Part of the 2024 Korea Heritage Media Art festival in Iksan, this work featured an interactive visual system by Jaeyoung Shin, responding to live music within the ancient Gangdangji lecture hall site.

The system came alive through a captivating collaboration with musician Dasom Baek performing on the daegeum (traditional Korean flute). As the haunting melodies filled the air, the visual elements, directed by PSYNCSTAGE, responded in real-time. Pillars of light and interactive projections ebbed and flowed with the music, creating a dialogue between sound, light, history, and space.

This immersive experience offered audiences a chance to connect with Korea’s rich cultural heritage in a new light, demonstrating how technology can enhance and interpret historical narratives and traditional art forms for contemporary viewers.

About Gangdangji at Mireuksaji: The “Gangdang” was a significant space for Buddhist lectures, sermons, and ceremonies. The Gangdangji (lecture hall site) at Mireuksaji is notable for its scale (65.6m x 9.8m) and state of preservation. As the largest known stone-podium building from the Baekje period, it offers invaluable insights into the architectural techniques of the era.
