Held at The Untitled Void from February 3rd to 17th, 2022, the exhibition “CURB.” convened artists Jaeyoung Shin, Sookhyun Yang, Seoyoung Je, Caroline Reize, and IVAAIU City. At the dawn of a new year, amidst hopeful perspectives on the pandemic’s end, the exhibition prompted reflection on the natural environment and our place within it. While humanity paused, nature showed signs of recovery, yet the impending return to full activity raised concerns about resuming past detrimental impacts. The title “Curb,” meaning ‘to restrain something bad,’ framed the exhibition’s inquiry: shouldn’t we strive to limit the negative consequences of our actions on the environment? “CURB.” juxtaposed works warning against these impacts with those celebrating the beauty of nature and life, urging viewers to consider what must be restrained to protect what we must preserve.

Jaeyoung Shin’s new media installation, “RECURSION,” directly addressed the exhibition’s theme by exploring divergent environmental futures. Utilizing a multi-camera setup, the work captured and reflected the audience within simulated potential environments. It visualized how different paths, representing human choices and actions, could lead to vastly varied ecological outcomes. The recursive nature suggested by the title hints at the feedback loops inherent in our relationship with the planet, urging contemplation on the consequences of our collective trajectory.
